Alternative Hikes to Machu Picchu

At Peru Private Tours, we take pride in curating exceptional experiences for travelers seeking to immerse themselves in the breathtaking landscapes and rich history of Peru. To ensure clarity and professionalism in your journey, please carefully read the following Terms & Conditions for our alternative treks, including the Salkantay Trek, Lares Trek, and other multi-day hikes culminating in the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu.

  1. Reservation Policies

1.1 Permit and Availability Confirmation:
Reservations are subject to availability of Machu Picchu access permits, train tickets, and other necessary arrangements. Confirmation will only be provided once one of our representatives confirms all bookings.

1.2 Payment Confirmation:
A reservation is considered confirmed upon payment of the deposit or full balance, as indicated by our sales team. Payment must be made promptly to secure the limited spaces for permits and services.

1.3 Mandatory Passport Requirement:

  • Customers must provide a scanned copy of the same passport they will use to enter Peru and Machu Picchu.
  • Failure to provide the correct passport may result in denied entry to Machu Picchu without any refunds.
  • If you renew your passport after booking, you must carry both the old passport (used for booking) and the new passport.
  1. Cancellation and Date Change Policies

2.1 Date Changes:

  • Date changes can be requested up to 30 days before the tour start date and are subject to:
    • A 15% administrative fee.
    • Confirmation of availability for the new dates.

2.2 Cancellations:

  • Cancellations made more than 30 days before the tour date: 40% refund of the total tour cost (excluding the deposit).
  • Cancellations made between 30 and 15 days before the tour date: 30% refund of the total tour cost (excluding the deposit).
  • Cancellations made less than 15 days before the tour date: 100% penalty – no refunds will be provided.

2.3 Non-Refundable Services:

  • The deposit covers permits for Machu Picchu, train tickets, and other essential arrangements that are non-refundable and non-transferable by law.
  1. Health and Fitness Requirements

3.1 Physical Fitness:
The alternative treks are physically demanding, reaching altitudes of up to 4,650 meters (15,255 feet). Participants must be in good physical condition and consult a doctor if they have any concerns.

3.2 Health Declaration:
Participants must inform us of any medical conditions, allergies, or dietary restrictions at the time of booking.

3.3 Age Restrictions:

  • Participants over the age of 70 must provide a medical certificate confirming their fitness to hike.
  • Parents or guardians are responsible for ensuring that children are capable of completing the hike.
  1. Included Services

The following services are included in all alternative treks:

  • Licensed Tour Guides: Professional, bilingual guides specializing in the trek routes and local history.
  • Camping Equipment: High-quality tents, sleeping mats, and cooking equipment.
  • Meals: Nutritious meals prepared by our trekking chef (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks).
  • Porters/Mules: Support team to carry camping equipment. Personal luggage up to 7 kg (15 lbs) can be carried by mules.
  • Transportation: Transfers to and from the trailhead and train tickets to/from Aguas Calientes.
  • Machu Picchu Entry Tickets: Standard entry tickets included.
  • First Aid: Emergency kits and oxygen are carried on every trek.
  1. Excluded Services

The following services are not included:

  • Sleeping Bags and Walking Sticks: Available for rent.
  • Personal Porter Services: Additional costs apply for carrying luggage beyond the included weight.
  • Gratuities: Tipping is optional but customary for guides, porters, and cooks.
  • Travel Insurance: Strongly recommended to cover cancellations, medical emergencies, and personal items.
  1. Weather and Environmental Conditions

6.1 Weather:
The weather in the Andes can be unpredictable. Customers must be prepared for sun, rain, and cold temperatures.

6.2 Packing Recommendations:
We recommend bringing:

  • Warm clothing (e.g., thermal layers and jackets).
  • Rain gear (e.g., poncho, rain jacket, and waterproof backpack).
  • Comfortable hiking boots and socks.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
  • Reusable water bottle or hydration pack.

6.3 Altitude Sickness:
The treks reach high altitudes. We recommend spending 2–3 days in Cusco prior to the trek to acclimatize. Medication for altitude sickness can also be taken if needed.

  1. Child Policies

7.1 Student Discounts:

  • Children aged 3–17 years old are eligible for a $25 discount with a valid student ID.
  • Children under 3 years old may pay a reduced fee for specific services, which will be confirmed by your travel assistant.

7.2 Documentation for Minors:
It is the responsibility of parents or guardians to inform us of the child’s age and provide the necessary documentation (e.g., original passport) to receive discounts or exemptions.

  1. Booking Confirmation

8.1 Booking Confirmation:
A booking is only confirmed once:

  • Peru Private Tours confirms availability of permits, tickets, and services.
  • Payment of the deposit or full amount is received.
  • Customers receive a confirmation email with details of the tour itinerary.

8.2 No Guaranteed Permits Without Confirmation:
Permits for Machu Picchu and other services are limited. Peru Private Tours cannot guarantee availability until explicitly confirmed by our sales team.

  1. Liability and Responsibilities

9.1 Customer Responsibilities:

  • Arrive on time for all scheduled pickups and services.
  • Follow all instructions provided by the guide for safety reasons.
  • Respect local communities, traditions, and the environment.

9.2 Peru Private Tours Responsibilities:

  • Provide professional, trained staff to ensure the safety and comfort of all participants.
  • Arrange all services as outlined in the confirmed itinerary.

9.3 Force Majeure:
Peru Private Tours is not liable for circumstances beyond our control, including but not limited to weather conditions, strikes, or natural disasters.

  1. Insurance

We strongly recommend obtaining comprehensive travel insurance to cover:

  • Tour cancellations.
  • Emergency medical evacuations.
  • Lost or stolen personal items.
  • Delayed or interrupted travel.
  1. Tips & Gratuities

Tipping is not mandatory but is highly appreciated as a gesture of thanks. Suggested tipping amounts:
